Podcast: Carbon Pricing is Dead. Long Live Carbon Pricing!

PCI’s Director, Dr. Danny Richter, recorded a podcast with Resources Radio host Kristin Hayes that was released this week. The 32-minute recording is available here. The interview covered a wide range of carbon pricing topics including carbon border adjustment mechanisms (CBAMs), the freedom carbon prices allow for creative policy making, the International Maritime Organization’s recent vote to impose the first global carbon tax on hard-to-abate shipping, and how language like “cap and invest” may make it easier for politicians to sell carbon prices, among others. The conversation also included a question on how “sticky” carbon prices are once passed, that inspired a recent blog post diving deeper into the topic.

Resources Radio is a weekly podcast produced by Resources for the Future (RFF). Several sources were cited during the interview, which are available lower down on the page for the episode, number 337 in the series. One notable update is that the episode was recorded before the 2025 release of the World Bank’s annual “State and Trends of Carbon Pricing” report. Though I report in the episode that 24% of the world’s emissions are covered by a carbon price, that figure has jumped to 28% according to the updated report.

EcoRights Speaks interviews Dr. Danny Richter

EcoRights Speaks interviews Dr. Danny Richter

In this podcast, EcoRights Speaks interviews Pricing Carbon Initiative’s, Dr. Danny Richter! Previously VP of Government Affairs at Citizens Climate Lobby, Richter made the move to PCI a few months ago and is working to break new ground as he did for years at CCL. Richter joins host Chelsea Henderson to talk about how PCI is bringing all sides together on climate solutions, their top-down approach and the challenge of getting an effective carbon pricing legislation with so many different political backgrounds. He also weighs in on the hottest carbon pricing topic right now – a carbon border adjustment mechanism.
